Acne And Skin Care Problems

When talking about acne and skin problems one automaticaly thinks that teenagers are the only ones who suffer. While it is true that acne usually begins in puberty it is not unheard of for it to happen later on. Teenagers have a lot of pressures to cope with at this time in their life (school, exams, boy/girl friends) as well as the changes in their bodies that the onset of puberty brings.

Some people think acne only occurs in dirty skin, this however is not the case. Hormones can cause acne problems too. To help combat acne it is essential that a strict skin care regime be followed. Cleansing must be done every morning and every evening to ensure the skin is kept clean and that pores do not become blocked.

The treatment of acne however requires more than a good skin care regime. The purchase of over-the-counter-medications can be helpful. These are usually topical applications with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. In some cases of acne prescription medications may be required.

The most common acne treatment is that of of benzoyl peroxide, found in a lot of topical treatments (ointments). Great care must be taken when using products containing benzoyl peroxide as it has a bleaching effect. Even though only a weak solution of benzoyl peroxide is used in acne creams, much stronger solutions are found in hair bleaching products.

Sulfur and salicylic acid are another combination of ingredients found in some acne treatments. Acne treatments containing these ingredients are available without a prescription, and generally not as harsh on the skin as products containing benzoyl peroxide. Sulfur and salicylic acid ingredients are also found in treatments for dandruff and other scalp disorders, such as seborrheic dermatitis.

Exfoliation and microdermabrasion are two types of treatment which can help in the treatment of acne. Both exfoliation and microdermabrasion remove the dead skin cells from the skin leaving it feeling soft, smooth and glowing. Both exfoliation and microdermabrasion have to be done on a regular basis if they are to have any lasting effect upon the skin.

While mild to moderate outbreaks of acne can be treated with over-the-counter medications, occasionally there is no other option than to seek medical advice. The family doctor is always on hand to offer support and advice with acne problems. He can also prescribe other medications which are only available with a prescription. Unfortunately, some cases of acne are so severe that further medical intervention is needed.

No matter how upsetting suffering from acne can be, acne can be treated successfully. Other things that can help improve the condition of your skin are drinking plenty of water and following a healthy diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables.
