Basic Obstructive Sleep Apnea Remedies

by Lisa Davies

In actual fact, there aren’t really a great many easy obstructive sleep apnea remedies and it can be a very dangerous and difficult condition to treat. However, there are certain steps that you can take to try and remedy if not correct it.

The most obvious solution to obstructive sleep apnea could be losing weight. If you are overweight and suffer from sleep apnea, then you probably have other problems caused by your weight which you may not want to acknowledge. Being overweight can cause diabetes, acid reflux disease, heart disease, arthritis and permanent joint damage. It is also linked to certain forms of cancer, and messes up your blood sugar and circulatory health. Of all the obstructive sleep apnea remedies, weight loss might be the one that is most beneficial to your overall health! So while it may not be much fun, it could really benefit not just your sleep apnea but your whole system.

Other remedies that are good for obstructive sleep apnea involve having to keep your mouth and throat moist throughout the night so that you can breathe more easily. This won’t completely stop your sleep apnea as you might still find that your airways are partially blocked by excess tissue, but if you can keep your mouth and throat moist, air can more easily pass through those areas. Try using a warm mist vaporizer or humidifier in your bedroom. Use some eucalyptus oil or menthol in it to help keep your air passages clear which will help to unblock your sinuses so that you can breathe easily through your nose or mouth. Chronic snoring can also be helped by these obstructive sleep apnea remedies.

Another way to potentially help obstructive sleep apnea is to raise yourself up in bed. Try some books or something under your mattress at the top or you could prop yourself up with some firm pillows. Don’t drink alcohol before you go to bed as this will make your muscles collapse all the more as alcohol will relax them and so exacerbate the problem.

As a matter of course, you should have a chat with your doctor about what obstructive sleep apnea remedies he or she could recommend so that you make sure you’re doing all you can to address your condition properly.
