Plastic surgery have become more acceptable in society these days, but most still do not understand much about it. It is not just for celebrities. There are actually different forms. You know elective surgery, but there is also reconstructive.
Think you know what plastic surgery is? Well, reconstructive surgery is probably not it. This type of surgery is designed not to improve the body, but to return it to its natural shape and look if possible. Doing skin grafts on a burn victim would be an example.
Sometimes, this type of surgical procedure will include broken limbs and skin grafting methods. Reconstructive surgery also includes the reattachment of toes and fingers; the addition of prostheses; or the manipulation of knees, limbs, and teeth.
Beyond scar tissue procedures, there are many other forms of reconstructive surgery that just anyone would find important. The surgery to repair the cleft lip and palates of children, for instance, is a form of reconstructive plastic surgery.
Elective plastic surgery is the type of procedure most people associate with the field. Think of the celebrity who suddenly has lips that look like two pillows. Elective plastic surgery is a voluntary attempt to alter the body to improve the appearance of the patient.
Women make up the majority of elective plastic surgery patients, but more and more men are trying it. Men tend to go for tummy tucks, hair transplants, and facelifts. Women tend to gravitate more towards nose jobs, breast augmentation and skin procedures such as peels.
In order to find out whether or not you can qualify for cosmetic surgery, you must visit with a licensed surgeon in order to go through a consultation. This surgeon will be able to tell you if your goals are realistic or not. Most will use before and after software to give you an estimate of the change.
As with anything, price is going to be an issue. Make sure you get estimates for the full costs associated with the procedure. Medical insurance will not cover voluntary surgery, but it will often cover reconstructive. Obviously, speak with your health insurance company to find out about your specific situation.
A quick word of caution with plastic surgery. You are making alterations to your body that will be permanent. Now is not the time to be cheap. Never shop for a surgeon by price. Cut corners in other parts of your life, not here.
The days of iffy plastic surgery have passed. Surgeons can do some amazing things these days. Whether you have a reconstructive or elective need, you are making a good choice.
