Replacing your treadmill belt will be your first maintenance job. It is the first part of the treadmill to wear to the point of replacement. The belt will show signs of wear after extensive use and you will know when it is time for a new belt.
Sometimes the belt will just look worn and that is enough to replace it. You will need a new belt especially if it is torn or worn to the point of curling upwards at the edges. A less apparent sign of wear is if you step on the belt and feel the treadmill slowing down. This slow down means that the tension of the belt is loosening.
If it is the latter of the signs there are a few things to check before you start tearing things apart. Firstly check the deck of the treadmill. If it looks ok then it probably just needs to be waxed or lubricated.
If it shows signs of wear, such as grooves worn into it, then it may be that both your deck and belt are in need of replacement. Otherwise, if the deck is perfectly fine, and the belt shows wear, then replacing the belt alone should suffice.
Make sure you unplug the power cord before getting started. To open up the treadmill, remove the hood that covers the motor. It is normally towards the rear of the treadmill and will reveal screws on both sides that controls the tension of the belt.
Loosen the belt by turning the screws. Once the belt is sufficiently loose, push the back roller up toward the front of the treadmill. Then go to the front and begin to loosen the front roller. Remove the front roller before the back roller.
Most people at this point want to cut the belt off, but then you may not know how to put the new one on. Instead, let’s remove the screws that hold down the deck. Remove both the deck and belt together. This is a good time to wax or lubricate the deck. Notice the seams on the new and old belt; memorize the direction so you can put the new belt on the same way.
Slide the belt over the deck and position both the deck and the belt together onto the treadmill. Put each screw in partially without tightening any of them yet until they are all in position.
Now straighten the belt towards the back of the treadmill and slide the back roller through the belt. Put the screws back into place in the same manner as you did with the front screws.
Now, it is time to slide the front roller into place and tighten the front roller. Then tighten the back rollers. Tighten the belt on each side equally.
Now turn the belt on at a very slow speed, step onto the belt and test it for tension. Make adjustments as needed. Once the final adjustments are made it should feel good when you step onto the belt.
