Clinical research has shown Oregano Oil to possess many health benefits. But before switching to a strict diet of pizza and spaghetti, you need to understand the difference between “true” oregano and other spices often mistakenly marketed or referred to as oregano.
Beware of Imposters: Marjoram and Thyme
The spice used in food isn’t even oregano. It is actually marjoram, or sweet marjoram as it is commonly called. Marjoram is rregarded as sweet because its flavor is much more mild and pleasant than “true” oregano. Marjoram herb and oil are used by food processors to flavor meats and beverages, and by cosmetic and soap manufactureres as fragrance.
Even some of the spice sold at your local market may not be marjoram, let alone oregano. Practically all of the so-called oregano available on the West Coast is really an oregano-like plant from Mexico. Yet it is completely unrelated botanically to either oregano or marjoram. It tastes and smells similar to oregano, but is really Mexican sage.
When it comes to dietary supplements, many of the products labeled as oregano are either marjoram or thyme oil producted form a non-oregano plant, Thymus capitus. These are not the same as oregnao oil nor do they posses its medicinal properties.
Recognizing “True” Oregano
With all of this confusion how can you be sure you’re getting “true” oregano? Look for a brand that’s correctly sourced and labeled as Origanum vulgare hirtum - the real species of medicinal oregano. Such is available in a patented preparation from Nature’s Way, the trusted leader in herbal medicine.
Potent Carvacrol: How “True” Oregano Works
The key substance in “true” oregano is a phenol called carvacrol. Making up75-85% of the oil, carvacrol is the primary active component that gives “true” oregano its benefits. Having a carvacrol potency this high is also an indicator that “true” oregano is present. “True” oregano also contains approximately 2% thymol, another active phenol. Together, carvacrol and thymol work synergistically - meaning “true” oregano packs a powerful one-two punch.
Advice for Using “True” Oregano Oil
Nature’s Way provides “true” oregano oil in vegetarian (non-gelatin) capsules. Each capsule contains 50 mg of oregano oil with a guaranteed natural potency of 75-85% carvacrol. Nature’s Way recommends taking just 1 capsule daily with food. Because Nature’s Way “true” oregano provides the full natural potency of powerful carvacrol, no higher dose should be taken without first consulting with a qualified healthcare professional.
Nature’s Way also recommends taking a quality probiotic supplement such as Primadophilus® along with, and after using “true” oregano oil. This will allow you to re-fortify and balance your system with friendly microflora as a healthy follow-up to an effective cleansing of oregano.
