Men Should Know About The Prostate Gland

by Mike Gardener

We all have worries about life, finances and work but the thing we should be most concerned about is our health since nothing else is as important. For men one of the concerns should be with their prostate gland and having some understanding of what it is and where it is will help explain some of the difficulties it can cause.

I am constantly surprised that male friends know so little about the prostate. Most women have some knowledge about breast cancer and want to learn about it but men ignore the prostate and seem to prefer not to know even though it is a purely male problem and can usually be effectively treated when problems are discovered in the early stages.

Why men choose to ignore this subject I do not know but it would be better if they did. Discussion of potential problems would encourage more men to get checks and would no doubt save many lives that might otherwise be lost.

They say that ignorance is no defence and that certainly applies to prostate health problems. Ignoring it will not make it all go away and being ignorant of possible symptoms leaves you open to the chances of far greater health problems later. Learning about your prostate and possible symptoms of prostate related health issues can help you together with your doctor in overcoming those difficulties.

The prostate does not generally present a great problem in men until they reach their fifties and the risks increase as they get older. The most common problem associated with the this is enlargement of the prostate gland. This occurs as part of the aging process but can become excessive in some men.

There is a one in six chance of a man developing prostate cancer in his lifetime in the US. Treatment is usually effective and the success rate following early diagnosis is very high. This clearly shows that early diagnosis is very important and men should be aware of the risks.

An early diagnosis and treatment can mean the treatment is 99% effective and because of this difference that an early diagnosis can make you should consult with your doctor and ask about regular checkups and examinations and why not mention the subject with your male friends. You might help save their life.
